Assessment of diastolic function: suggested methods
نویسنده
چکیده
RECENT STUDIES in diseased hearts have demonstrated that diastolic dysfunction may precede abnormalities in systolic ventricular performance. Therefore, it is important to critically review methods currently being used in the assessment of diastolic function. Many review articles and symposia that express differing points of view have been published recently. '-5 Several of the controversies stem from a misunderstanding of basic principles of physics and mathematics, the use of inappropriate analyses, and the desire to develop simple indexes of diastolic function. The emphasis here will therefore be on the development of relationships between pertinent physiologic parameters, the applications of various mathematic models, and suggestions of topics requiring further study. In particular, attention will be focused on methods for the assessment of chamber stiffness, myocardial stiffness, and the time constant of relaxation since these are important factors involved during shifts in the pressure-volume relationship after drug intervention or pacing-induced angina.

The influence of Asthma on Right Ventricular Systolic and Diastolic Function in Children according to Tissue Doppler Echocardiography
Introduction:Asthma is the most common chronic inflammatory condition affecting the lower airways among children. Asthma may influence right ventricular (RV) function and patients may develop right ventricular hypertrophy, pulmonary hypertension and cor pulmonale. The main objective of this study is to determine RV dysfunction in asymptomatic asthmatic children as detected by ti...
متن کاملDoppler-Derived Myocardial Performance Index in Healthy Children in Shiraz
Background: Assessment of myocardial function is essential in heart disease, but in regard to systolic and diastolic functions such evaluation has limitation. Ejection fraction is difficult to assess in abnormally-shaped ventricles, and diastolic inflow velocity pattern may be fused because of tachycardia. Objective: A myocardial performance index (MPI) or Tei index has been developed for adult...
متن کاملPulsed Intra-Arterial Drug Injection during Diastolic Phase of Cardiac Function Increases Drug Efficacy by Enhancing Pharmacological Exposure of Targeted Tissues
Diastolic phase of cardiac function is associated with lower arterial flow and hence higher concentration of intra arterially injected drug is achieved at the site of injection. It is herein postulated that drugs show higher efficacy when injected during the diastolic phase of cardiac function. It is also postulated that this benefit cannot be achieved when the drug is injected with higher rate...

Extended abstract Echocardiographic Evaluation of Left Ventricular Function and Geometry in Pediatric Patients with Kidney Transplantation Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is an important, leading cause of mortality and morbidity in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) as well as in renal transplant recipients. Cardiovascular complications become more important in children because of the i...
متن کاملThe role of a structured exercise training program on cardiac structure and function after acute myocardial infarction: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial
BACKGROUND Exercise training is effective in improving functional capacity and quality of life in patients with coronary artery disease, but its effects on left ventricular systolic and diastolic function are controversial. Diastolic dysfunction is a major determinant of adverse outcome after myocardial infarction and, contrary to systolic function, no therapy or intervention has proved to sign...
